waiting for saturday : brooklyn stoop

wfs, sunday on the stoop

July 29, 2014

The first summer anyone spends in New York often involves a stoop—and if you're young enough when you arrive, a bottle Olde English on it. It's kind of a right of passage, to watch people walk by and wonder if what you're doing is totally illegal or just a little bit illegal or—if it's private property—is it actually legal? (Nope, it's not.) It's a custom we haven't really abandoned in our later years, with some tweaks of course. The malted liquor became rosé, the flip flops became leather gladiators, the magazine didn't actually change very much but Porter didn't exist back then, so there's that. Here's a stoop—and our very favorite stoop stuff.

1. Gladiator Sandals: Nicole just bought these and she thinks they solved her most pressing shoe riddle. A brown sandal that you can slosh around in, maybe even get caught in the rain in, and still be OK with it because they're not a million dollars and they'd actually benefit from some roughing up.

2. Avene sunscreen: This was purchased on a trip to France when I [Olivia] realized I had forgotten sunscreen and SPF 20 was the highest SPF I could find. Believe it! But the most amazing part is that it somehow works, like, surprisingly well. I may not wear it in Mexico, but the light formula feels more like moisturizer than sunscreen and I've never burned when I've worn it. Totally solid for a stoop day.

3. Porter Magazine: Nicole broke down and bought a subscription and I'm so very glad she did because that means I can read it to my heart's content. Thanks Nicole!

4. Super Sunglasses: These are the types of sunglasses people stop and ask you about whenever you wear them. They look heavy, almost as if you stole them from him, but they're not actually heavy on the face. So they accomplish the whole I'm-cool-enough-to-pull-off-his-sunnies-and-still-look-amazing thing.

5. Rosé: Does this actually require an explanation? Related aside: do you follow this instagram feed? You really won't regret it.
