waiting for saturday : vintage tom jones t-shirt

wfs, the gift of saturday

December 15, 2014

As I'm writing this, CBS Sunday Morning's Charles Osgood is in the background saying, "There are exactly 11 days left until Christmas." And 2ish days until Hannakah. [As of today, 10 and 1ish days, respectively.] Which means if you haven't gotten your gifts yet, you're not totally screwed (honestly, who has actually done all their shopping already?) but you definitely are walking that dicey fine line when impulse buys and desperate last-minute shopping might be in your future. Initially Nicole and I did not have plans to create a gift guide. After years of putting them together for our respective jobs we felt "ug" at the thought. But after chatting about our own personal gifting dilemmas over hot toddies Saturday night, we realized that we could possibly offer a few ideas, in the spirit of Saturday, that hopefully won't feel contrived and may actually help.

Here goes...

1. Vintage tees. Nailing gift giving has one obvious requirement: uniqueness. AKA something whoever you're gifting will know was not found on a table at Anthropologie (no judgement, we've all been there). In the unlikely chance, there exists someone who doesn't want the vintage men's Chicago Bulls T-shirt linked above, there's also this. The beautiful Tom Jones tee shown up top was snapped at Ray's, who for the record has one of the best collections of vintage tees on the planet. Laurel and Emily also happened to both be in vintage tees that were gifted to them the day we went to visit, and they testified to the fact that these were some of the most extra-special things in their closet.

2. Sweatpants. This one, admittedly, is not for everyone. Some people just aren't the sweatpant type (i.e. Lucy), but for those that are, these Nike beauties are akin to giving you license to stay in on New Year's eve watching The Twilight Zone marathon, and spending New Year's Day doing it all over again. In other words, a gift that keeps on giving.

3. Slippers. But not just any slippers—we know slippers appear on gift guides constantly—these slippers. If you gift these, the lucky receiver will have and love them forever. We speak from experience having both been given these at different points of our lives.

4. A trifecta of home scents (the following was suggested by Julia): Palo Santo, Votivo Red Candle, and an essential oil diffuser with oils.

5. An indulgent beauty product. Need we sing the praises of Tatcha's face masks? Or Tata Harper's? You know the adage, "Gift someone something you'd want for yourself"? Well.

6. Enhance their weekend cocktail ritual with whiskey rocks or wine pearls (or both). These are a practical gift, in a way, but so fancy and made to enhance really one of the best parts of Saturday, chatting over a glass of wine or a whiskey. Bonus points for adding on this cocktail book.

7.  Upgrade their movie-watching with a mini projector. This gift is so good. Cosi turned us on to this idea, she basically had a home theater in her bedroom. It's a splurge-y idea, something for the people on your VIP list, but who wouldn't want this? Man, woman, child (or parent, best friend, husband, sibling) it's a crowd-pleaser.

8. The motherlode of gifts: a stay at the Standard East Village with the Waiting for Saturday package. We know, we know, this sounds like a shameless plug for our collaboration, but honestly would there be anything nicer than surprising someone with a hotel stay + a goodie bag c/o wfs and discounts to the best businesses in the neighborhood? For someone you really want to spoil.
