waiting for saturday : emily holland refinery 29 & laurel pantin lucky magazine

laurel & emily, editors, saturday

November 22, 2014

The beauty of unscheduled time is, ironically, all the things you fill it with. We started wfs after years of projects that had no purpose—random photoshoots, themed secret Pinterest boards, experimental new recipes and now, of course, this site. When we met Laurel, a freelance fashion consultant and Emily, an editor at Refinery29 we knew we were in likeminded company. Tie dying upstate, Instagramming for their joint account, Cool Fun Stuff, myriad DIY projects—their "together time" is very full. Even if "full," on some days, means wearing matching tie dye sweats & watching 3D television. (More on that, below.)

wfs: Hi Laurel! Hi Emily! Tell us about Cool Fun Stuff.

Laurel: We had this idea and because we have so little time, it's become a record of things we love and do together. I think it's nice to see it as a visual representation of friendship.

wfs: What's a typical Saturday like for you?

Laurel: I usually get up between eight and nine. I like to stay in bed for a little bit. [My boyfriend and I will] go on long walks, or maybe go to some galleries. And then we'll have dinner pretty late with friends around nine or ten. We don't ever cook, it's terrible, we don't even have forks, there's like nothing in our fridge. On a really lucky night we'll go to Minetta Tavern after having not eaten much all day and we'll order so much food and have this disgusting over-the-top feast.

wfs: Any other places besides Minetta you love?

Laurel: Il Buco Alimentari, Cherche Midi, Sant Ambroeus, Perry Street or Carbone for fun fancy places. It's fun to go late, wearing whatever you're wearing. That feels fully indulgent—I like to eat. My favorite restaurants in the city are Daddy–O and Sant Ambroeus.

wfs: What's your typical Saturday like Emily?

Emily: I wake up pretty early too. This morning I got up at seven. My boyfriend has a motorcycle so sometimes we'll go out of town. I'm not into as extravagant of dinners as Laurel but I love a solid dinner. We go to Bacaro a lot or Isa in Williamsburg. Mogador we like a lot, too. My weeks are so hectic, it's nice to stay local and take long neighborhood walks.

wfs: Tell us about this jumpsuit, Laurel.

Laurel: I did this project in Portland with this brand Wild Fang. This girl Randi was the makeup artist for a shoot we did. We became pen pals. She's the most interesting person I've ever met. I saw a picture of her wearing a jumpsuit and I asked her where she got it and she sent this to me. I had nothing done to it but it fits perfectly.

wfs: What are you wearing Emily?

Emily: I got these Levi's at Grand Street Bakery but I’ve got a bit of a collection going—I’ve been spending too much time on eBay. This T-shirt is also vintage. My old boss gave it to me, she was kind of a mentor.

wfs: What are the things you do that feel specifically "weekend"?

Laurel: [My boyfriend] Justin really likes to watch football. On a Saturday when it's really cold he'll put the game on mute and and we'll listen to music, and sit on the couch and I'll read magazines or the paper. That's a heavenly afternoon.

Emily: I bike everywhere, long bike rides with my boyfriend feel pretty specifically weekend.

My ultimate favorite thing to do before going out on a Saturday night is doing a hard workout later in the day. Then I get into a hot bath with my Kindle and a Bulleit on the rocks. -Laurel

wfs: What about beauty? Do you have any weekend beauty rituals?

Laurel: I don't think I can wear makeup without looking like Jonbenet Ramsey so I'm really into skincare. I like this Dr Jart pore face wash, it's really foamy but not super lather-y and makes these tiny bubbles. I also like Dermalogica Micro Foliant and the Nude skincare products: the oil, the serum and then at night I use the moisturizer. During the day I'll just put on the serum and tinted L'oreal silky fluid moisturizer. Sometimes I'll do a face mask series. I like the Proactiv refining mask. It makes your skin look really good. I like a peeling mask from Suki, too and this rescue mask from Elemis. I use the Fresh Rose Perfecting Mask as well. I really do love skincare. Those masks, those are a Sunday night thing. Oh and I also love to take baths. I exercise a lot and I like to take epsom salt baths with a little coconut oil in the tub. My ultimate favorite thing to do before going out on a Saturday night is doing a hard workout later in the day. Then I get into a hot bath with my Kindle and a Bulleit on the rocks. My dad used to drink Chivas on the rocks in a hot shower. I didn't understand when I was younger but it is nice—being hot and having a cold drink. I am the ultimate pleasure person. I really like to indulge myself.

Emily: [For beauty] I'm the opposite. I have no ties to beauty products or regimens. I have a Kheil's mud mask that I try to do weekly and I use a Clarisonic. I recently did get into the Aesop Parsley Seed Moisturizer and I’m obsessed. I think that might be my new thing—maybe I'll explore the realm of Aesop products.

wfs: Do you work out?

Laurel: We used to see a trainer together once a week.

Emily: And then we kind of decided…[laughs]

Laurel: ...to put it on hold for a while. [laughs]

Emily: I run a lot. I don't feel like I've worked out unless I get cardio. I like a spin class from time to time.

[My dream Saturday would] start in the mountains and end on the beach. I'd sit by a fireplace at some point, drinking either wine or whiskey on the rocks. -Emily

wfs: Guilty pleasures?

Laurel: My boyfriend doesn't have anything in his apartment other than this TV so Emily and I have  been getting into this 3D TV thing.

wfs: What do you like to watch?

Laurel: Animal nature shows, deep sea shows. I watched a college cheerleading competition with them on and that was really good.

wfs: OK so on that note, if you could be on a reality show, which one would you pick?

Laurel: Amazing Race. I'm dying to do it. My brother and I would win. We're the complete package.

Emily: I’d love to be a cohost on Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain.

wfs: Tell us about your sweatpants.

Emily: We went upstate and brought a bunch of shirts and underwear.

Laurel: When we hung everything up—we only did blue—it was all so pretty.

wfs: Laurel, since you travel a lot can you recommend a destination to go for adventure?

Laurel: For adventure, Madagascar.

wfs: What about for the ultimate relaxation?

Laurel: Canouan in the Grenadines.

wfs: ...and for a completely different cultural experience?

Laurel: I don't know. Beijing really did make me feel like I was on the other side of the planet.

wfs: If you could have a dreamy perfect day off where would you be and what would you do?

Laurel: For the mood I'm in specific for right now I'd go to Paris with my boyfriend and spend a day walking around: stopping for a snack, having a drink. I'd go swimming at night in some rooftop pool. I'd definitely have a burger and fries or steak frites for dinner. After swimming in the pool there would be a room full of puppies. [laughs]

wfs: Amazing. What about you Emily?

Emily: I'd do something epic in nature. I've been fantasizing about a road trip in Montana. The day would start in the mountains and end on the beach. I'd sit by a fireplace at some point, drinking either wine or whiskey on the rocks.
