waiting for saturday : paulina liffner little liffner

paulina, designer, saturday

March 10, 2015

The first time we met Stockholm-based handbag designer Paulina was over an early breakfast at The Marlton Hotel (our meeting was accompanied by multiple orders of avocado toast). We went through a lighting round of questions that time, Paulina is one of those refreshingly unguarded people that speaks her mind, jumping from subjects quickly—i.e. a recent dinner at Mission Chinese she adored, getting her first ever ticket for running a red light on a Citi Bike in NYC (needless to say, something she did not adore), consolidating her possessions to one perfectly simple clutch for evening—all topics she can speak about in as much or as little detail as prompted (we like to prompt!). The second time we met Paulina was at her West Village Airbnb—a beautiful spot she tries to procure for the long periods she stays in NYC. We felt like we were at home with her, eating the most delicious breakfast-y pudding and green smoothie she whipped up for us, talking usual Saturday indulgences: going back to sleep after breakfast, boozy brunches and late nights with her family. More on all that, below.

wfs: Hi Paulina! Tell us about what you're wearing, that sweater looks so dreamy and comfy.

Paulina: It's Tabula Rasa, I love her knits. She does home stuff too, blankets and pillows. This shirt is [my husband] Gustav's, I just grabbed it right now. Typically if I'm not naked until 2pm on a Saturday, I'm in one of his shirts. It's probably Margiela.

wfs: It is! I saw the stitches on the back.

Paulina: I want to have my own custom shirts made this spring, a perfect beige in that summer safari-ish way. My jeans are Zara, super comfortable! I bought them just before coming here, I’m really craving white at the moment. Generally I'm quite planned in the way I shop, I make a list every season and try to follow it. Most of the time I succeed but once in a while I get seduced by some cool shoe and can't resist the temptation.

wfs: Describe your dream Saturday. Where would you be? What would you eat? How would the day unfold?

Paulina: I would wake up in Stockholm and slip out of bed for an hour of yoga. I make a mean berry smoothie so I'd do one of those, plus some avocado toast, and soft scrambled eggs. It's all fake New York breakfast, really [laughs]. I'd put it all on a tray and head back to bed where I would wake up my husband, Gustav. We'd spend time digging into huge piles of books and magazines on our nightstand—this is my favorite moment of the week, my brain is rested and I get inspired. Since we're talking "dream Saturday," our new New York favorite Cherche Midi would have magically moved to Stockholm and our best friends would all be in town, so we meet them there for a 4-hour—at least—lunch laughing and catching up on life. Lunch would end with a huge piece of tarte tatin and proper crème fraiche, plus a glass of passito. We would go see a movie at Sunshine Cinema, also miraculously moved to Stockholm, before meeting up with family for takeout and lazy talk on the floor of our living room. Our dining room currently serves as a messy, umm "creative office." We'd pass out around 2am.

If you want a balanced lifestyle, stick with your day job! Doing your own thing will be equal parts horrifying and fabulous.

Saturday Dossier, Paulina

Wake up time: 9am

Bedtime: 2am

Favorite Saturday indulgence: A long, laugh-y, boozy lunch on the town with friends.

Favorite saturday smell: My husband.

Least favorite thing about Saturday: Nothing can be bad about Saturday. It’s even wedged in between two other great days that has its back, Saturday is untouchable, really. The only bad thing is that there are too few of them. Two Saturdays a week would be ideal.

Recommendation for a Saturday hangover: The Swedish aspirin Treo, it’s nothing short of a miracle. And a good glass of red wine for lunch, fight fire with fire.

Saturday outfit of choice: Preferably nothing until 2pm. Then a perfect pair of high waisted jeans, platform boots, a big tailored coat and if I’m lucky in the dark horror that is Stockholm winter, I might need a pair of big sunglasses.

Saturday beauty product of choice: Glamglow Powermud face mask.

Saturday guilty pleasure: Going back to sleep after breakfast. And another nap in the late afternoon.

If Saturday were an animal it would be: ...a big beautiful lion, which is also my star sign, Leo.

If Saturday were a celebrity she/he would be: ...someone luscious (and maybe somewhat decadent). A woman for sure. Nigella Lawson?
